Zorn commits to Campbell for 2009

Near the end of today's season-ending press conference, Jim Zorn committed to keeping Jason Campbell as the team's starting quarterback going in to next season.

Zorn also mentioned bringing back Todd Collins and Colt Brennan (who's having knee surgery) back, and working with all three of them during the summer.

Zorn said he expects even more improvement from Campbell, who is coming off his third season as a starting quarterback.

"What I'm going to do is what I did last year. I took time with [Campbell] before minicamps started," Zorn said. "Once the offseason program starts we'll be able to do some scheme work. ... His footwork was poor when we got here, it's gotten a lot better, and it's going to get a lot better this offseason because of the stuff we're going to ask him to work on."

Zorn also reiterrated that he doesn't see Brennan unseating Campbell.

If he don't improve by the 4th game next year then he is never going to be ready to lead this team.

Is Matt Ryan being overcoached? Is Joe Flacco being overcoached? Are the Ravens' and Falcons' coaches in their quarterbacks' ears after every series? Quit overcoaching him, Zorn, and Campbell will play instead of thinking about your damn details which are being crammed into his head every minute of the game and during practice. He can't see the forest for the trees, trying to please you. Let the poor boy play football for crying out loud, he'll be in his 5th year. You may not believe this Zorn, but Jason Campbell is not in Pop Warner.

Campbell is a nice young man - an average NFL QB. He's had the time and the excuses keep coming. Every time Campbell sees a microphone he says that he's had a new offense to learn each of his last ten years! Then - almost without a breath - he says that that's not an excuse. Excuse me? Colt showed the flair that it takes to be special in this league last preseason -- and he seems to have the intangable "IT," really great QBs need. Colt was an old rookie and he's not going to be satisfied as a number 3 or even 2 for very long. Play the exciting QB, Colt, then trade Campbell for whatever he can garner. Like another bust #1 pick QB, Ramsey, they will be lucky to get a 5th or 6th rounder. Heck, they only spent a #1& #3 on him four years ago.

A quarterback is only as good as the line that's protecting him and the receivers to which he throws -- not to mention a competent front office that will give him a fair chance to be successful.

I would like to see Colt Brennan get more playing time. He's exciting, and has the potential to be a franchise player. Zorn seems to be very down on him, however.
