Punters in the building

By Ryan O'Halloran on Oct. 14, 2008 into Redskins 360

Back here at Redskin Park, the hotel shuttle bus just dropped off four players -- three of them look to be punters, none of them appear to be Shaun Alexander.

Durant Brooks also walked into the building a few minutes ago. We'll see if he walks out with a Hefty bag full of equipment.

This has the potential to be one of those wacky Tuesdays that happen about 3-4 times a year at the Park.

By the end of the day, the Redskins could have a new punter and a new back-up running back. Swapping one punter for another is an easy roster move; to sign Alexander -- probably the pro-rated veteran minimum -- the Redskins would have to release a player. My guess would be a young guy who could sail through waivers and then be placed on the practice squad.

The Alexander visit is curious. If Ladell Betts is supposed to be out only three weeks, is Alexander coming here with the understanding that he'll be cut once Betts is healthy? Is Jim Zorn doing him a favor by letting him get 30 or so carries on film for other teams to evaluate so they can possibly sign Alexander later in the season? Is Betts' injury a lot more serious?

Clearly, the Redskins don't have a lot of faith in Rock Cartwright has a No. 2 running back although Zorn called him one of the team's best players last week (entirely because of his special teams play). Zorn has given no indication this season that he's unhappy with Betts.
