Washington's release official

The Washington Redskins are in search of a starting outside linebacker after the team released veteran Marcus Washington today.

Washington, who spent five years with the Redskins, shouldn't be surprised by his departure. He was  banged up for most of 2008 and looked like he had clearly lost a few steps in coverage and when pursuing running backs to the outside.

The Redskins do save some salary cap space but it also creates this issue: Does it change the Redskins' draft plans for the 13th pick? Selecting a linebacker who can play right away is now more important than a pass rusher who would play nowhere near as many snaps.

Update: The Redskins won't tender safety Reed Doughty, who finished the 2007 season and opened 2008 as a starter. That means that, come next Friday, the restricted free agent will be free to pursue other offers.

Doughty missed the final 12 games of last season with a back injury that required surgery. Rookie Chris Horton played well in his place, leading the team with three interceptions and finishing third with 81 tackles.
