'Jason is our quarterback'

By David Elfin on March 17, 2009 into Redskins 360

  • Subscribe

That was the word from Redskins front office boss Vinny Cerrato this afternoon when I questioned him about the rumors flying around the Internet about Washington trading Jason Campbell, whose contract is up after this season, to Denver for unhappy fellow quarterback Jay Cutler.

Cerrato added, "We haven't talked to anyone" when asked about Cutler and re-iterated that "Jason is going to be our quarterback this season."

Is vinny coming out and saying Campbell is our QB a kiss of death. Last year Vinny was asked this question and he danced around it hmmmmmmm.

If Vinny says Campbell is 'our quarterback,' then a trade for Cutler must be imminent. Would be nice if they could package the chronic fumbler Cooley in the deal.

Campbell is the man.

That comment by Cerroto doesn't sound to convincing to me. It would be stupid for the Redskins to try and get Cutler. They would have to give up way too much -- either future draft picks or some of their younger/future stars (Cooly, Landry, Rodgers, Horton - that's about it i guess). Cutler might be a slight upgrade over Cambell, but its not like he's the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady

"Cutler might be a slight upgrade over Cambell". Slight, you have to be kidding me? Campbell is a nice guy but a less than average QB. Joe missed on Desmond Howard and he missed on Campbell.

All I'm saying is that you stick Cutler in Washington's offense and there is no guarantee that he has the success he had the past two years in Denver. And when you look at this past year, he's not head and shoulders above Campbell. 86% QB rative (vs 84% for Campbell) 62.3% Completion % (vs 62.3%) 25:18 TD:INT (vs 13:6) The main difference is that Cutler threw more passes, and as a result threw for more yards, more TDs, and INTs, than Campbell did. Oh and the fact that he was sacked only 11 times to Campbells 38. I'm not making the case for Campbell being better than Cutler. I'm just saying that he's far from a sure thing and it would be stupid for the Redskins to trade Campbell PLUS away any player or draft pick of any significant value just to get Cutler. You want to come out ahead in any trade. A strait swap (or maybe a low draft pick thrown in) and you would come out ahead. A Campbell + Landry/Cooley or a Campbell + 1st/2nd rounder for Cutler woudld be stupid.

If you trade for Cutler you end up with an overly sensitive BABY. He hears that his team entertained the idea of trading him (in FEBRUARY!) and he comes to pieces?? Not only does he seem naive for not realizing that the NFL is a meat market and he is just a commodity, he seems to have a highly inflated view of his services. Perhaps his sub-.500 record as a starter is what makes Jay seem so special to Jay? You need your QB to be a natural leader and to have a certain presence about him. Jason may or may not be that guy for the Redskins going forward, but it certainly isn't this epic crybaby Cutler who seems to think whatever team he's on is his own personal sandbox. That kind of attitude kills a locker room.
