Jarmon addition ripple effect

The Redskins made what they think -- and I tend to agree -- was a smart move today by giving up their 2010 third round pick for Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon.

Most teams had Jarmon projected as a late first/early second round pick in 2010 so the Redskins got good value. But fans should temper their expectations for Jarmon. I think the Redskins could be looking at 2009 as a redshirt year of sorts for the 6-3, 278-pounder.

Jarmon missed all of the OTAs, off-season conditioning and full-squad mini-camp so he's way behind once he arrives at the Park. Vinny Cerrato said there's no pressure on Jarmon to produce right away. But Jarmon's arrival will have a ripple effect.

The Redskins have 14 defensive linemen on the roster -- 16 if you include Brian Orakpo and Chris Wilson, who are working at linebacker but are listed as DE/LB.

My first guess is the Redskins will keep nine defensive linemen and I won't count Orakpo or Wilson.

The locks at DT: Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Kedric Golston, Anthony Montgomery.

The locks at DE: Andre Carter and Jarmon.

The lock as a DE/DT: Lorenzo Alexander.

That leaves two spots for the rest of the players. I think both will be defensive ends.

The candidates: Phillip Daniels, Renaldo Wynn, Alex Buzbee, Derek Walker and J.D. Skolnitsky.

Jarmon's arrival really makes it tough for Buzbee. Daniels and Wynn will be the favorites and if they make it through camp, I'll say they'll be the two players.

But Wynn was a surprise release a few camps ago and if Buzbee flashes or Wynn is banged up, his second stint with the Redskins could be a short one.
