Thrash: No timetable on retirement decision

Two days after breaking the story that James Thrash might have to retire because of a lingering neck injury, I ran into the Redskins' receiver at an NFL Players Association press conference this morning. Here's what Thrash had to say about his situation.

"Right now I'm just trying to get it back to where I feel comfortable," said the 34-year-old Thrash, who has received treatment virtually every day since the bulging disc began acting up again after the start of workouts on Mar. 16.  "If they tell me that I have to have surgery [to be able to play a 13th season], then I'll have to decide what I'm going to do. Right now, I'm not looking that far ahead. I've trained so hard my whole life. This is a different challenge. I haven't set [a deadline]. I try to keep open communication with coach [Jim Zorn] so we're on the same page."

Zorn said Thursday that the Redskins will have decide by the start of training camp on July 30 whether to keep Thrash on the roster. He could be placed on the physically unable to perform list in order not to take one of the precious 80 roster spots for camp.
