NYT's scoops on Cindy angers McCain camp

By KIM KWEDER on Oct. 18, 2008 into Trail Times

If the political mudslinging wasn't enough between the presidential candidates and their vice-president picks, the focus is now sticky on an accusation of media bias with The New York Times as the target.

The newspaper had been working on a profile of Cindy McCain and sending reporters to Arizona and around the country to scoop up a story.

But the assignment heated up after NYT reporter Jodi Kantor sent a Facebook message to a 16-year-old schoolmate of the McCain family's daughter, Bridget.

The McCain campaign released a statement that reprimands the "series of vicious attacks" on McCain's wife.

"... Though  Mrs. McCain’s battle with drug addiction and even her miscarriages are again reported, the paper entirely ignores a life devoted to family and charity work in the most impoverished and violent corners of the world -- except when a detail can be quibbled with so as to imply some kind of deceit," read a statement from McCain-Palin spokesman Michael Goldfarb.

The campaign team has obtained a copy of an e-mail sent by the reporter and has accused her of 'duping' the unsuspecting minor by "soliciting ‘advice’ on how best to approach the story ..."

Here is an excerpt to the Facebook message:

"I saw on facebook that you went to Xavier, and if you don't mind, I'd love to ask you some advice about a story. I'm a reporter at the New York Times, writing a profile of Cindy McCain, and we are trying to get a sense of what she is like as a mother. So I'm reaching out to fellow parents at her kids' schools. My understanding is that some of her older kids went to Brophy/Xavier, but I'm trying to figure out what school her 16 year old daughter Bridget attends-- and a few people said it was PCDS. Do you know if that's right? Again, we're not really reporting on the kids, just seeking some fellow parents who can talk about what Mrs. McCain is like.

Also, if you know anyone else who I should talk to -- basically anyone who has encountered Mrs. McCain and might be able to share impressions -- that would be great. Thanks so much for any help you can give me."

A letter dated October 1, 2008, by Cindy's attorney, John Dowd, to NYT Managing Editor Bill Keller, is a call for his editorial staff to "put your biases and agendas aside" and advised not to allow his reporters to pal up with former AVMT employee Tom Gosinski and Cindy's cousin Jamie Clark.  Mr. Gosinski was fired by Cindy and he sued for wrongful termination; Clark is accused of attempting to blackmail Cindy a number of times, according to the letter.

"These allegations and efforts to hurt Cindy have been a matter of public record for sixteen years. Cindy has been quite open and frank about her issues for all these years. Any further attempts to harass and injure her based on the information from Gosinski and Clark will be met with an appropriate response. While she may be in the public eye, she is not public property nor the property of the press to abuse and defame," according to the letter.

The New York Times is not the only publication the McCain campaign is trying to, in their view, clean up.

Two weeks ago, The Washington Post was criticized for pointing to the wife's troubled past.

Again, media with the exception of journalists like this one will use any means to achieve their goal of ushering in a new world order that will silence truth and opinion. It's the Christian foundation that even allows freedom of dissent. The rest can't tolerate opposing views so they drown them out in a barrage of lies and nitpicking sidebars designed to keep people in the dark to what the truth really is.

Then Go Scoop up on Michelle Obama Fair is fair Lets see you find a Story to rattle her feathers. She left a law firm to work for the city. Nice way to down grade income to pay off college loans, Or Did she get Affirmative action for college? Bouncing around Board to board with Jarrett. On the LandMark board until the day her landmark house closed. Her Circle of friends from Hyde park, University Of Chicago and hospital. Did she work with Dohrn at the same law firm? What about all the Political and Activist groups early years and on. Was she on the Drill team at TUCC Her Speeches some were said to be colorful You have only done puff pieces on Michelle, Lets see some fairness.

Read the article this morning, and I like Cindy McCain even more than I did before--and I'm Democrat and Obama supporter. Yes, it reviewed her past problem with with addiction, and could have highlighted her recovery more, but I felt the article presented a portrait of a gentle soul, who's supporting her husband, even if it will cost her her privacy. Her international work is to be commended, and she is clearly a loving mother and wife, a compassionate woman who has done much, and will continue to do much, to alleviate the suffering of the most desperate people in the world.

To tell you the truth I have often wondered "why is it that media people are never investigated and their backgrounds looked into? I remember when one news organization described how their reporters should not belong to liberal groups like NOW and others. It was not told to them that this could affect neutrality and bias them, it was that it didn't look good if the public found out. I want to know all about these media celebrities, their associations, their abortions, their drug use, their promiscuity, their investments and "favors". Why not?

This is a mob hit piece. I am really not surprised that the NYT would do this. . .I hate how the media is acting. In the 34 years that I have be LEGALLY eligible to vote I believe we have hit an all time low. You can expect this from the political parties, but from main stream media (if that term even exists!) I am desperately saddened, and disgusted. This is the first time in my ADULT life that I am not proud of the election process.

Reporter sounds like an experienced online child molester.Maybe the Police should be investigating them and I'm not kidding.Hope they don't have children.Probably don't or they couldn't be so creepy.

The left wing has been trying to chase Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin into a soccer stadium for a couple months now to stone them to death. They just might succeed since its the press---that's supposed to call attention to the violations of individual rights--- that will be doing the stoning.

The New York Times is an Obama Campaign. It's become a propaganda organ of the DNC. But it does have some value. It makes and excellent fish wrap in is very useful for house training a puppy.

The Obama camp wants to pick on Cindy because of the possibility that MO really screwed up -- check out the African Press International and WorldNetDaily to hear about the phone call API claims she made to them because of their coverage of Jerome Corsi's findings on his recent trip to Kenya.

This story is no Scoop! This is political TRASH pure and simple. Mrs. McCain has probably done more for the people in need in our world through her charitable efforts than all the people on the Obama campaign combined (especially the "very generous" Joe Biden). Mrs. McCain, like all of us, has had her struggles. But she is one of the strongest and most dedicated activists for those in need in our world today. She does not just compalin about how we should help others. She goes out and does it. Now, the NYT must smear her in order to make Senator Obama look better!!!!!How low can the media in this country stoop?

I suggest we think in terms of newspaper companies as being businesses producing a consumer product. If I and enough of other consumers and advertising sponsors believe the product is inferior and thus stop shelling out our money for the product (newspapers, online or print) the business will either improve the product or be forced out of business.

The Facebook contact that NYT's reporter Jodi Kantor made to a minor as reported in this story is creepy in more ways than one. It sounds manipulative. It brings to mind those police states that asked children to inform on their parents. What is the NYT's business in contacting children through Facebook?

I am Joe. I am an American. I vote. I can't wait to vote for Sen McCain and Governor Palin. I don't, and won't, buy the NY Times, the Washington Post, the LA Times, or the San Francisco Chronicle. I don't listen to CNN. I respect Cindy McCain. Michelle Ma-belle pontificates about doing good things to save the world. Michelle Ma-belle says some folks may have to give up a bigger piece of their pie so others can have more. Michelle talks. While Michelle talks, Cindy McCain is in action helping the less fortunate. Cindy is action. Ma-belle is words. I respect Mrs. McCain.

Does this really surprise anyone? This is standard operating procedure by the communist news media like the NYSlimes. Of course they are to busy to do any investigative reporting on the real Obama.

I was very upset when I read the NYT article today. It was very old news, and had nothing to do with the race. Yes, Cindy McCain has made mistakes, but so have many of us, and she recognized them and was upfront about them. The poor woman had a stroke, for goodness sake, and they question THAT?! A lot of it was insinuation, and belonged on the gossip page. In addition, it was plain rude to Cindy McCain, who has done a huge amount of good things for sick and hurting people in many places. What unprofessionalism to email a 16 year old through Facebook. No wonder the newspapers are laying people off in droves! Thank you.
