McCain's Hispanic strategy failing

By Stephen Dinan on Oct. 20, 2008 into Trail Times

A new Zogby poll of Hispanic voters says Barack Obama is clobbering John McCain, 70-21 percent.

That's about half of the 40 percent George Bush won in 2004, and matches the recent low-point for Republicans in 1996, when Bob Dole collected just 21 percent of Hispanics' votes on the way to a drubbing at the hands of Bill Clinton.

The difference is that it comes for a candidate who, more than any other Republican on the national stage, can claim to have tried to win Hispanics. Early in his congressional career McCain supported what at the time he called amnesty, opposed English-only efforts was telling Arizona Republicans to look to Hispanics for their future. He was so eager to win Hispanic votes he actually voted against the 1986 amnesty because he felt the work verification requirements were too harsh to Hispanics.

But here's the problem for Republicans: Losing Hispanics by that margin would be a giant setback for those like McCain who want to see legalization, since it will only add more evidence to those such as Tom Tancredo who argue Republicans will never be able to outbid Democrats on the issue.

Why would it not fail? All we have here is another group looking for the easy way. Immigration laws mean nothing, give us a free ride to your health care system, unemployment, social security and any oher goodies Nobama and the Democrats will provide. People need to remember illegal immigration is a large part of the deficits the states and federal government have.

There are 44 million American citizens of Latin ancestry.A demographic best not to insult. They are predominately Catholic, very religious,pro-life,very hard-working,pro-family,even more so than my own "Anglo"demographic, and do not like to be insulted.Honor is not merely a word among them,it is a standard to be maintained. The anti-immigrant activists among the Republican,or 'conservative',paleo-bigots have spit in the face of a once promising demographic quite open to appeals based on sound values. The crudity of the intemperate invective directed against them has given the left-wing activists a perfect opening for them to organize Latinos. Sheer stupidity and small-eyed bigotry have driven a wonderful group of very conservative people out of any chance of being available to the conservative movement, their natural home based upon their values, any time in the near future. 44 million, folks, that's a tremendous number of good, solid people to alienate. And gratuitous insults have a way of being off-putting. Our Republic was founded on the best principals available to humankind. The laws we now have on immigration are the result of early 20th-century eugenics. These foolish laws are antithetical to the principals of our founding. They are based also on an erroneous economics, statist, static pie, and a desire for economic planning, and population control, even ZPG. Spit in the eye even of someone's cousin, and you alienate them both. There are very few Conservatives who are aware of this anymore. We all shall rue the day,and our Republic may be irreparably damaged by the short-sightedness of ignorant people, all too easliy led.Herd behavior is a hallmark of the left, but conservatives also participate in herd follies too,it appears. And G.W.Bush knew better, but didn't well enough explain the facts of demography and Latino virtues to the benighted . It saddens me greatly to see our cause,Liberty, fail so ignominiously, and for no Good reason, but the folly of our compatriots. God save the Republic!,'cause the Republicans and conservatives are now failing.Read this Nov.5. Then curse the day!
