Scozzafava Should Withdraw

By QHillyer on Oct. 22, 2009 into Water Cooler

After we published this editorial on the outrageous attempt by New York's liberal Republican congressional candidate Dede Scozzafava to intimidate the Weekly Standard's John McCormack, and after not one but two  attempts by the Scozzafava campaign to further smear the reporter, including one in which they all but accused the reporter of being a stalker by saying they had "no doubt he intended to follow her home, too," it turns out that the Associated Press has confirmed that an audio recording of the event totally confirms Mr. McCormack's version of it and proves that the Scozzafava campaign was being untruthful.

Forget the politics of this. Forget any questions of ideology or political philosophy. As a simple matter of protecting a free press, of showing proper mortification at any attmpt to use police power to intimidate an honest reporter, I believe that Dede Scozzafava ought to withdraw from her race. Just one opinion in defense of the First Amendment -- one opinion that I think is shared by many. Furthermore, all the Republican bigwigs who endorsed her and helped finance her, including the NRCC and the RNC and former speaker Newt Gingrich, ought to privately urge that she step down and, if she doesn't, they should publicly call on her to do so.  Police state tactics are inexcusable, and the media in general, along with all who cherish constitutional checks on abuse of the police power, ought to fight such tactics and defend fellow journalists/bloggers from them. Ms. Scozzafava should stand down.

A. Let those of us that live in the 23rd District decide for ourselves. B. Yes, she should step down. Dede is an awesome person, but one with the same views as those in the Democratic party. We don't want to be represented by an abortionist.

Keep your thoughts in Washington. Those of us that are know Dede also know that the extreme right republicans/conservatives are trying to smear her with half truths.....I have no doubt that the truth about the instance as put forth by Mrs. Scozzafava's husband ( I am sure she did not request that he call the authorities) and as put forth by Mr. McCormick, is somewhere in between. Of course only those who were there know for sure, but I can see the scenerio where, after answering questions from multiple sources that night, the function was completed and Dede should have been allowed to depart without being hammered by more questions. Watching the commercials that are being put forth by the dems and the conservatives, it is without a doubt, a campaign against her by both of them, with many many many half truths and innuendos.....typical Washington style politics..with Dede being the only one who is trying to campaign on the issues and concerns of New Yorkers in the 23rd district.

I completely agree with NNyorker that those outside of this impoverished area of the state should keep their noses out of NNY politics. The Conservatives and the Democrats have rewritten the book when it comes to smearing and muckraking against DeDe. And why is that for a scheduled meet the candidates that The Democratic and Conservate candidates pull out at the last minute to do fund raising OUTSIDE of the 23rd district? I am so ticked off at this BS that the Democrats and Conservatives and the "Conservative Rebulicans" are spreading that I am telling as many people as possible that the only REAL candidate who is not kowtowing to OUTSIDE interests is Dede Scozzafava.

I understand that the people posting support of this woman are actually liberals, so they may not know the answer to this. But can someone give a few examples of where her beliefs actually coincide with the Republican party? Of course, you actually would need to show examples, instead of just saying so. I mean, I can't think of a single Republican who is in favor of the union goon card check legislation, let alone federal funding of abortions, the stimulus abomination, and of course apparently everything else she's seems to support. As for the " what concerns the voters in upstate New York", get over yourself. The Republican party is a national brand. I could care less what goes on up in the sticks, but I do care when a liberal democrat is using the Republican name to get elected.

By the way, is there anything funnier than some telling outsiders to stay out of upstate New York business on a Washington based website?
Mark as offensive

NNYorker

Yes..there is something funnier, the fact that the Washington Post would interfere with upstate politics at all, after all, we are just a bunch of red neck hicks who dont know anything, why should they even care?

NNYorker

Sorry, I misspoke myself...Washington Times, not the post.

@AngryAntwerpian, @NNYorker, @AngryNNYorker: Last I checked, this was a race for the U.S. House of Representatives, not the New York legislature. This means she will be making decisions that affect all of us, not just those of you in New York, so those of us outside of New York have legitimate reason to be concerned with this race.

Dede, get off the internet and go have another Big Mac.

Although I did not grow up in the North Country, I was raised in Central New York and am familiar with the economic problems of the region. Those problems have been exacerbated by NYS politicans of both stripes. What is really galling are the NYS Republicans like Scozzafava who are relentlessly liberal on social and economic issues and think of themselves as somewhat enlightened. It is their policies that have driven the region into the ground and why I and thousands of other former NYers now live in Virginia. Scozzafava is a tax and spend liberal and social liberal Republican whose Assembly voting record reflects that of a House Democrat. Anyone disagree?

"Scozzafava is a tax and spend liberal and social liberal Republican whose Assembly voting record reflects that of a House Democrat. Anyone disagree?" I agree with everything except for the Republican name. Maybe the cold has frozen NY brains, but people who stand for what she does are not Republicans. They're not even Democrats. They are liberals, or as they like to sneakily refer to themselves, progressives.

SicSempterTyrannis, Blame downstate NY and Washington GOP leaders for handpicking this disaster. Let's see if they redeem themselves by getting her to suspend the trainwreck of a campaign.

@ORConservative....I hope your concern with our election leads to you making a donation to the Hoffman campaign so he can counter the union money just dumped into Owens coffers.

USAProud

This Conservative has made a donation, has walked the streets with brochures, has made phone calls, has held signs, and has talked to a lot of like-minded people when it comes to wanting a fiscally conservative representative who will listen to us in office. Did you hear that Washington----I said will listen to us! How refreshing it is to have a candidate like Doug Hoffman running for office. I have never worked on a political campaign before, but I am all out for Hoffman. We need someone like him in Washington. Let me modify that statement. We need many like him in Washington. This may be my first campaign but it surely will not be my last. And I am not the only one. There are a lot of us angry conservatives out here.

Dekalbfarmwife

I find this string to be incredibly offensive. Dede is being attached only because she is a strong woman. The big mac comment - way out of line. Frankly it is very telling the kind of "conservative" support going to Hoffman. The 23rd Congressional District NEEDS a woman who knows how to manage and has that EXPERIENCE - this means more nowadays than ever. If she was a man running - Hoffman would have never entered the race. Hoffman - get out of the way and let someone win who will truly help the North Country. Stay in and you are working for the Democrats and it will be alot worse for us all up here.
