Democrat Sylvia Garcia

Sylvia R. Garcia (b. September 6, 1950, in San Diego, TX) is a Democratic member of the U.S. House representing Texas's 29th Congressional District. She is seeking reelection to her current seat. Garcia was first elected to the House in the general election in 2018. In 2018, Garcia defeated Republican Phillip Arnold Aronoff and Libertarian Cullen Burns (Garcia – 75.1%; Aronoff – 23.9%; Burns – 1.0%). Garcia earned her undergraduate degree from Texas Woman's University and a J.D. from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University. She went on to work as a social worker and a lawyer. Garcia served as director and presiding judge for Director and Presiding Judge of the Houston Municipal System and later as a member of the Texas state senate. In 2020, she was appointed by the House of Representatives as one of the managers to conduct the impeachment proceedings of Donald J. Trump, President of the United States.
