John Carney
John Charles Carney Jr. (b. May 20, 1956, in Wilmington, DE) is the 74th and current Democratic Governor of Delaware. He was first elected to be governor in 2016. He won election to succeed term-limited Gov. Jack Markell (D). He has not announced his intentions to seek reelection to his current seat. In 2016, defeating state Sen. Colin Bonini (R) and others (Carney – 58.34%; Bonini – 39.19%; others – 2.47%). His current term ends on January 2021.Carney received an MPA from the University of Delaware. He served as the U.S. Representative for Delaware's at-large congressional district from 2011 to 2017 prior to his governorship. Carney was also the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Delaware from 2001 to 2009 and served as Delaware's Secretary of Finance.
