Democrat Mazie K. Hirono

Mazie Keiko Hirono (b. November 3, 1947, in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan) is a Democratic U.S. Senator representing Hawaii. Hirono who was first elected to office in 2012 by a margin of 26 points, said she planned to seek a second term in May 2017, at the same time she announced she was receiving treatment for Stage 4 kidney cancer. "You know me. I am prepared to fight and win this battle. And here's what I also want you to know: I am, without question, running for re-election in 2018. The stakes are too high and our shared values are under attack like never before," she wrote. She previously was a member of the U.S. House from 2007 to 2013, the Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii from 1994 to 2002 and a member of the Hawaii House of Representatives from 1980 to 1994. Based on analysis of multiple outside rankings, Hirono is an average Democratic member of Congress, meaning she will vote with the Democratic Party on the majority of bills.
