Joe Vellano wears No. 72 as a defensive lineman for Maryland, the same number his father, Paul, wore when he dominated the gridiron at College Park. Paul was named an All-American in 1973; Joe earned the honor last season, when he led all ACC defensive linemen in tackles with 94. Even as a boy (below), Joe Vellano seemed destined to follow in his dad’s footsteps. This year, he will be a linchpin in the Terrapins’ new 3-4 defensive alignment.
