In this Feb. 2014 photo, a cargo ship passes beneath the Sidney Lanier Bridge on its way to the Port of Brunswick, Ga. Dredging is underway in Brunswick’s shipping channel to clear out accumulated sand and sediment that’s made the waterway too shallow for many ships to travel at low tides or with full cargo loads. The Georgia Ports Authority says the waterway connecting the Brunswick port to the Atlantic Ocean is only 30 feet deep in places just seven years after the Army Corps of Engineers deepened the channel to 36 feet.
