My fellow Democrats…
I am a Democratic Governor of a Democratic State that has seen Democratic policies lift us to new heights.
From the shores of the Chesapeake to the streets of Baltimore…
our Maryland economy is thriving.
We have the lowest unemployment rate since records were kept.
We have the lowest poverty rate in the nation.
And we have the second highest family income in the country.
Thanks to some of the nation's toughest gun safety laws, crime is down and our citizens are safe.
In every one of our communities in Maryland, we are building and modernizing schools at a record pace.
We're reducing class sizes and raising teacher pay.
We know our children are our future.
And we know that our children's future is shaped in our public schools today.
Ladies and gentlemen, our record in Maryland is built on the policies that Al Gore advances… and the vision that Al Gore articulates.
Our outstanding Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Kennedy Townsend and I are proud of the success that the people of Maryland have built.
But nowhere is that success more critical than in our commitment to preserve… protect… and restore our environment.
Think about it- the water we clean up…
the air we don't pollute…
the land we leave unspoiled.
This is our legacy to future generations.
And Al Gore is leading the fight to protect that legacy.
We can preserve and protect our natural resources.
We can stop the sprawl that is eating away our open space.
We can breathe new life into our existing communities.
And we can have all that and have a record-shattering economy.
I'm pleased that Maryland's smart growth anti-sprawl program has become a model for other states.
Thanks to Al Gore's leadership and support, smart growth is a national movement… an historic movement.
Al Gore and Joe Lieberman envision a future based not just on economic prosperity, but on community prosperity as well.
A future where people spend evenings not stuck in traffic…
but having dinner with family…
or watching a daughter's soccer game.
With vibrant communities where people can work, go to a restaurant or museum…
take their child to a playground in safety and in comfort — all just moments from their home.
And where our natural resources are not just protected but restored for future generations.
This can be our future, but only if we choose Al Gore and Joe Lieberman, the candidates with the courage and vision, to make the tough choices, and unite us with purpose.
My fellow Democrats, let us lead the charge for Al Gore and Joe Lieberman, and let us seize the future.
