Her father's eyes

"Two and a half years ago, I walked with my father along the beach in Santa Monica… . We passed a small girl, maybe 6 or 7, walking with her father, clutching his hand.
"I leaned closer to my father I remember my ear brushed his shoulder and whispered, 'I'm sorry I was such a jerk for so much of my life. Can you forgive me?' He turned and looked at me with such lightness in his eyes, the corners crinkling into a smile, that I blushed as tears pressed into mine.
" 'Of course,' he said simply.
"I want you to know this because some people will tell you Alzheimer's steals everything. But it doesn't steal the heart, and it doesn't encroach on the soul.
"My father's soul shines through his eyes: That's the image I want people to have."
Patti Davis, writing about her father, Ronald Reagan, in "My Father's Eyes," in the June issue of Citizen

Render unto Caesar?

"Many people will be outraged by the Supreme Court's decision [Monday] that students in government schools cannot lead prayer at public events.
"I'm not… .
"Cast your children's fate to the government and this is what you will get.
"Government schools have one purpose to turn your kids into walking, talking government automatons, devoid of religious values, unable to think for themselves, ready, willing and able to serve the state as their highest authority… .
" 'School sponsorship of a religious message is impermissible because it sends the ancillary message to members of the audience who are nonadherents that they are outsiders, not full members of the political community, and an accompanying message to adherents that they are insiders, favored members of the political community,' wrote Justice John Paul Stevens for the majority.
"What a joke! Every single day in government schools religious children are given just such messages through curricula… . In a thousand ways, religious kids are given the message that they are outsiders and not full members of the political community… .
"It's time to get your kids out of government schools… .
"Flee from the government propaganda factories. Teach your children at home or find a good private school that reflects your values… .
"Jesus said to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's.
"Do you think your children belong to Caesar? Or are they truly a gift from God?
"If you agree they are a gift from God, why are you turning them over to Caesar for six to eight hours a day?"

Patton's prayer

"Good thing George Patton didn't have the U.S. Supreme Court with him in 1944 at Bastogne.
"That December, Patton's troops found themselves bogged down in the Saar with bad weather, which allowed German panzers to attack without fear of Allied air support. Patton responded by calling in the army's padre. Not only did he order up a prayer for good weather, he had 3,200 copies of Training Letter No. 5 distributed to commanders throughout his army, emphasizing the importance of getting the men not to confine their prayers to church and services.
"Though released under the signature of the Third Army chaplain, there was no mistaking whence the order had come: 'Be assured that this message on prayer has the approval, the encouragement, and the enthusiastic support of the Third United States Army Commander.' …
"In the event, the weather did break and Patton went on to save Bastogne. Today, he'd probably find himself up on charges that he'd violated the separation of church and state."
