Cabin John Regional Park, 7400 Tuckerman Lane, Rockville. From Interstate 270 north, take Democracy Boulevard west. Go right on Westlake Drive and left on Tuckerman Lane. Make a left into the park at the first entrance.


Spaces are plentiful and free. If the 157 regular spaces at the Tuckerman entrance are occupied, backtrack to the park entrance on Westlake Drive, where another 143 spaces are available.


There is no entrance fee to the park. Miniature train rides are $1.25 per person; children younger than 2 ride for free.


The park is open sunrise to sunset year-round. The miniature-train station opens in mid-April and closes after the last weekend in September. The train runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every 30 minutes. During the school year, the station is open on weekends only; in the summertime, it is open daily.


Shelters, tables, drinking fountains, grills and restrooms are available to the public. A snack bar is open on weekends and holidays from late spring through Labor Day. Group picnicking for 175 people (maximum) is available via reservation. Light alcoholic beverages are permitted in this area. A fee and permit are required; call the park permit office for reservations at 301/495-2525.
