The area's two biggest bicycling clubs are the Washington Area Bicyclist Association and the Potomac Pedalers Touring Club. The WABA can be reached at 202/628-2500 and the PPTC can be reached at 703/356-2589. Both have Web sites (www.waba.org and www.bikepptc.org) that list upcoming bike rides.

Riding tips for beginners:

• Stay to the right on a bike trail and resist the temptation to look behind you if you hear someone approaching.

• Bicycle bells are useful to help warn riders ahead of you. Some jurisdictions even require them.

• Water bottles should be mandatory equipment, particularly if rides will take you into the countryside where there might be few, if any, rest stops. Rain gear and cell phones also are good accessories to have.
