D.C. police are searching for an armed serial sex-offender who wears a black and white bandana around his head each time he strikes.

Investigators believe the same man attacked three women in separate incidents between Aug. 7 and 11 in parts of Northeast and Southeast. Police are investigating a possible fourth sexual assault that occurred in July.

The attacker carries out each crime much the same way: He carries a dark-colored handgun, forces his victims to secluded areas and wears the same clothes each time right down to the headband.

"Either he meticulously cleans his clothes every day or he's pretty dirty," said Capt. Chris Cummings.

Last Tuesday, a 22-year-old woman told police a man walked her at gunpoint into a wooded area in the 5200 block of Banks Street NE about 9:30 a.m. and sexaully assaulted her.

Another 22-year-old woman reported a similar attack at 9 p.m. that night, although she was led into a secluded area in the 4000 block of East Capitol Street NE.

The third incident took place Saturday, when a man forced a 17-year-old up to the roof of a building in the 2900 block of O Street SE.

In each case, the victim described her attacker as a black male in his early 20s with a dark complexion. He is about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 140 to 160 pounds.

Each time, he wore a black T-shirt with unknown markings on the front, blue-jean shorts rolled at the knees, baggy white socks and black Nike sneakers.

Police are in the neighborhoods canvassing for clues and are getting the victims together to make a composite sketch. Anyone with information about the man is asked to call 6th District police investigators at 202/727-4515.

In a separate case in Montgomery County yesterday, a District Court judge ordered John Hickman, 25, of Rockville held without bond on charges of attacking several young girls since March.

Mr. Hickman, arrested Saturday, faces nine charges including first-degree sexual assault and indecent exposure in three separate incidents involving four girls.

According to police, a man on March 24 shoved a 13-year-old girl over a railroad trestle in Germantown, injuring her arm, then sexually assaulted her 13-year-old friend.

On May 12, a 17-year-old deaf girl was attacked on a bike path in Gaithersburg.

And a man posing as a maintenance worker sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in a Germantown apartment on July 9, police said.

The judge increased bail in the May attack to $100,000. The first-degree sexual assault charge alone carries a maximum of life in prison.

Police are trying to determine if Mr. Hickman is responsible for other attacks in that area.
