SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMESCANTON, Ohio George Allen, the coach who restored the long-dormant Washington Redskins to respectability in the 1970s, has been selected as one of the finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame next year.

Allen, who died at 72 in 1990, was chosen yesterday by the Seniors Committee. He must be elected by a majority of the shrine's Selectors Board when it votes in January.

Allen coached the Redskins from 1971 to '78, with his lone Super Bowl appearance after the 1972 season.
