Seen and heard last night at MCI Center:
CAPS ADDITIONS Corey Hirsch was recalled from the Portland (Maine) Pirates to back up starter Craig Billington in goal. Olie Kolzig did not dress for the game with what was reported to be a sprained right ankle.
Hirsch played one game for the Caps last season, relieving Kolzig against Ottawa on March 11, playing one period and earning a 6-5 victory.
Glen Metropolit had been recalled earlier to fill in for injured center Andrei Nikolishin.
PROSPECTS ADVANCE Two Washington draft picks, center Brian Sutherby (first round, 2000) and defenseman Nathan Paetsch (second round, 2001), have been selected to compete with the Canadian national junior team. Sutherby played in seven games with the Caps this fall before being returned to his junior team in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where Paetsch also plays.
HOW'S THAT? Jaromir Jagr bobblehead dolls can be purchased at some local stores and for a reasonable price. But, eh, the doll doesn't look anything like Jagr and has the left-handed wing shooting with his right hand, which might drop the price to an even more reasonable level in a few weeks.
OFFICIALS HONORED Five members of the Caps' off-ice officiating staff were honored by the NHL for long service to the league. All received watches recognizing 25 years' service although all five have been working Caps games since the team was founded 28 years ago. Those honored were Park Anderson, William E. Brooks Jr., John M. Crerar, Roger Reinke and James Wiseman.
