China replaces Li

Indian envoy changing

India is preparing to send a new ambassador to the United States to replace Naresh Chandra.

Indian news reports say Lalit Mansingh, most recently foreign secretary, is due to take up his position in Washington early this year, although an exact date has not been announced.

Mr. Mansingh "has been rewarded with a coveted post as he had a good rapport with [Foreign Minister] Jaswant Singh," the Asian Age newspaper said.

Mr. Mansingh was appointed foreign secretary, essentially deputy foreign minister, in December 1999, after serving as India's ambassador to Britain.

Mr. Chandra has been ambassador in Washington since April 1996.
