If you'd like to recapture the feel of the old swimming hole and still stay safe, here's a sampling of what's in our area.

Quarry swimming

Milford Mill: Washington Avenue, Randallstown, Md. Daily through Labor Day with some closures for private parties. Fees range from $2 for ages 2 and younger weekday mornings to $11 for ages 12 and older on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. Exit 18-B (Randallstown) off I-695 to the first right onto Washington Avenue and less than a mile to the club. 410/655-4818.
Oregon Ridge: Beaver Dam Road, Cockeysville, Md. A fine quarry north of Baltimore, Oregon Ridge offers a variety of activities from swimming to outdoor concerts of the Baltimore Symphony. Lake swimming

Cunningham Falls State Park: 14039 Catoctin Hollow Road, Thurmont, Md. Swimming in three designated areas of Hunting Creek Lake and a sandy beach along with hiking trails and breathtaking views of a 27-foot waterfall. $2 per person Monday-Friday, $3 per person weekends and holidays through Labor Day. Deep Creek Lake State Park: 898 State Park Road, Swanton, Md. Camping, picnic areas with beach access. Lifeguards on duty during the summer. See www.dnr.state.md.us/ publiclands/western/ deepcreeklake.html or call 301/387-5563.
Greenbrier State Park: 21843 National Pike, Boonsboro, Md. Freshwater lake swimming. $2 per person weekdays, $3 per person weekends and holidays, half price Wednesdays through Labor Day. See www.dnr.state.md.us/ publiclands/western/ greenbrier.html or call 301/791-4767.
Half Moon Beach: 363 Radio Station Road, Strasburg, Va. Swimming, paddle boats, fishing, camping, volleyball, paintball, batting cages, minigolf. 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily through Labor Day. See www.halfmoonbeach.com or call 540/465-5757 or 540/465-9537.
Lake Anna State Park: 6800 Lawyers Road, Spotsylvania, Va. Lake swimming, plus a playground, boat ramp, hiking trails and a children's fishing pond. Adults $4, children $3 for weekend swimming through Labor Day. See www.dcr.state.va.us/ parks/lakeanna.htm or call 540/854-5503.
Hole swimming

Tom Hillegass' Web site, www.swimmingholes.org, lists swimming holes around the country. Not all of these holes are sanctioned, and most are not patrolled by lifeguards.
