Longing to retreat to the woodlands of Loudoun County to commune with nature in the privacy of a 3-acre wooded lot? Then visit the property at 20492 Oatlands Chase

Place in Leesburg, now on the market for $600,000.

The owners of this French-style Colonial brick home so relished the creative experience of designing their own home once that they chose to do it again with this 4,400-square-foot home. Twenty-two years ago, they found a homesite of deep woods not far from their existing home and began clearing a portion for building.

They kept a perimeter of tall trees along the road to maintain their privacy and then designed an elegant front lawn and rear garden area with a thinner row of trees surrounding the house for shade and beauty.

While their earlier endeavor had been a rambler-style home, this building includes three finished levels of oversized rooms with elegant touches such as swirl-patterned ceilings, wrought-iron stair railings, crown moldings, mullioned and leaded glass Andersen windows and five crystal chandeliers.

The owners focused their attention on creating an elegant yet comfortable home, with large and gracious rooms featuring tall windows to frame the trees. An advantage of designing your own home is the ability to add special features that reflect the owners' lifestyle.

These folks love to entertain, so they created a game room/bar area with a huge wet bar and a built-in side buffet for serving hors d'oeuvres complete with a strip of electric outlets for food warmers. Closets with space for extra serving dishes have been placed on the lower level and near the kitchen.

For outdoor entertaining, the owners built a wide porch with space for dining and sitting and enjoying the view, which includes a lighted electric-powered fountain made from a former well.

Besides entertaining, one of the owners enjoys sewing, so a huge sewing room with a built-in ironing board and two large closets for materials was added to the basement. Additional lighted closets have been built in all the bedrooms and around the house.

Colorful leaded glass panels are set into the wood doors that open into the two-story foyer where guests are greeted. Each of the formal living room and the formal dining room that flank the foyer has a deep bay window overlooking the front lawn.

The living room also has a marble fireplace in the corner, one of three working fireplaces in the home.

Behind the dining room is the custom-designed kitchen, which has cherry cabinets and a curving breakfast bar that also serves as a barrier when the owners want to cook and chat with company yet keep them out of the kitchen. The kitchen includes two wall ovens, a Jenn-Air cooktop, a built-in microwave, and such extra custom features as a drawer fitted to hold a recipe file.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a breakfast area with a large window facing the woods. Nearby is a large laundry room with a built-in ironing board and cherry cabinets to match the kitchen.

Beyond the breakfast area is the cozy family room, a whitewashed brick room with a raised-hearth fireplace. Sliding glass doors lead from this room to the "outdoor living room," the covered patio. On the opposite side of the kitchen is a private corner library with built-in bookshelves and mullioned windows on two sides. Adjacent is a full guest bath that allows the den to function as a guest suite.

Upstairs, the master suite includes a huge bedroom area with a cedar-lined walk-in closet, a second closet and a spacious bathroom with a separate shower and tub.

All the bathtubs have lights inside for reading while soaking, and this tub also has mirrored doors to allow for a full length view when dressing. Two additional bedrooms on this level are each oversized and have plenty of closet space. They share a large full hall bath.

The lower level is where the owners have particularly enjoyed their home, whether sewing in the sewing room or entertaining in the recreation room or adjacent bar. The recreation room includes a raised hearth fireplace with a Heatilator system that circulates the air for added warmth. Real walnut paneling has been placed in the finished rooms on this level.

Unfinished space is used as a large exercise room and for storage. Attic storage space also is available and accessible from one of the bedrooms, and the oversized two-car garage has extra storage space, as well.

The owners have consistently maintained and upgraded their home over the years with new appliances including a water softener system, a new water heater, a central vacuum system, a super-efficient heat pump, a humidifier, an electronic air filter, a monitored security system, a computerized thermostat and a whole-house fan with a timer. An intercom system connects all the rooms, and TV connections are available in all rooms, too.

What the owners love most besides the pride of having a place they designed themselves is the complete privacy afforded by living amid the trees. Animals wander often on their property. During one memorable day, they saw 13 deer at once in the back yard.
