Many residents of Reston recognize the name Warren Katz, architect and builder of some of Reston's finest con-temporary homes. Signature Katz elements include soaring cathedral ceilings; skylights and oversized picture windows to flood the home with light; built-in drawers and shelves in every possible corner; and a reverence for the wise use of open floor plans.

A Katz-designed redwood town house at 2015 Turtle Pond Drive in Reston, on the market for $419,900, includes these elements along with the added delight of a water view from the upper-level loft and balcony.

From the exterior, the redwood town houses lining the Turtle Pond Drive cul-de-sac look sleek but perhaps a little boxy and dull. Yet an observant passer-by might notice the huge windows and the cheerful balconies with their red-painted railings and catch a glimpse of the soaring ceilings inside.

This house includes an oversized two-car garage with storage space and a short driveway that holds two more cars. Inside the home, guests are greeted in a gracious foyer with a slate floor and extra-wide golden oak steps. The golden oak extends to all staircases in the house and all over the main level. The owners recently added this flooring and also upgraded the kitchen, adding gas heat and hot water, and replaced the roof.

Angled walls and high ceilings add drama to the main level, which has a two-story living-room space at the rear, overlooking the garden. A wood stove rests on a raised platform along one wall, while built-in shelving and drawers add to the efficiency of the space. Two long skylights above this room recently were given new glass. Across the back of the living room and the adjacent open dining room are walls of windows, including a sliding glass door leading to the garden.

The owners have created a charming oasis in their back yard, which has a waterfall leading into a pond, Japanese-style plantings, a flagstone terrace, and steps leading up a gentle slope to the adjacent wooded common area. For buyers who love to walk or swim or both, this home represents the Reston ideal: A swimming pool with a removable cover for all-season use is next door to this town-house complex, the Reston trail system is easily accessible, and a shopping center and three schools are within walking distance.

Back inside the house, the dining room features recessed lighting and a mirrored wall, along with an angled narrow wall that helps define the space. Nearby is the streamlined kitchen, which features white cabinets, beveled-edge counter tops, high-quality appliances and both recessed and under-cabinet lighting. Adjacent to the kitchen is a large family room that also could be used as a breakfast room. This space features a front wall of windows with a display ledge above and also has a doorway leading to the top of the foyer steps.

Hardwood stairs lead to the second level, where a narrow landing loft area overlooks the living room. The skylights above the living room also shed light on this area. The master-bedroom suite features two sections of his-and-hers closets and a linen closet, all with built-in shelving and space organizers. His-and-hers bathrooms are adjacent to each other. One has a sink and vanity with multiple drawers, a commode, and a glassed-in shower. The other includes another sink and vanity with multiple drawers and a deep whirlpool tub with a half-wall separating the bathroom area from the bedroom. A wall of tall windows across the front of the house fills the bedroom and sitting area with sunlight.

Two additional bedrooms on this level each have Berber carpeting to match the master bedroom's carpet, and each has a built-in dresser with multiple drawers and shelving. These bedrooms share a full bath off the hall. The bath has ceramic-tile flooring.

An open oak staircase leads to the dramatic third level of the home, a huge loft with a gas fireplace with a raised hearth. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves line one wall, and the entire front of the room has large windows and a sliding glass door to the balcony. Views of Lake Thoreau shimmer beyond the windows and front balcony.

Toward the rear of this room is a built-in office alcove with a desk, drawers and shelving. The rear balcony, which offers wooded views, is accessible through a glass door near the office. Track lighting and Berber carpeting have been added to the loft.

Oak stairs also lead from the main level of the home past a sleek powder room and down to the lower level, which has an unfinished storage room with shelving and a large laundry room with a sink and kitchen-quality cabinets. A laundry chute conveniently links the bedroom level to the laundry room. Access to the two-car garage and its storage space is nearby. This home also includes gas heat, central air conditioning, an electronic air cleaner, a humidifier and a gas water heater.

The open and dramatic design of this contemporary home lends itself to a variety of lifestyles. For buyers with children, the loft area makes an excellent play or study area, and the family could enjoy the added amenity of living just one or two blocks from the elementary, middle and high schools. For the empty-nester, the loft level offers the possibility of functioning as an artist's studio or a home office in addition to family space.

The current owners enjoy entertaining and relaxing upstairs and have placed a cozy dining table for two in front of the windows with the lake view. Capturing a bit of sunshine any time of day is possible in this house, too, with its front and rear outdoor spaces.
