Rep. Bob Stump complains that, although a bill authorizing construction of a World War II memorial on the Mall was passed eight years ago, it has yet to be built (“Memorial gets boost from House,” May 16). The final design has still not been approved, yet Congress insists that everyone must sit down and shut up and that construction must begin immediately?

From its very beginnings, this memorial has been the pawn of individuals and groups seeking spotlights for themselves. That controversy has delayed progress for eight years certainly suggests that we´re dealing with the wrong design in the wrong place.
