• "Choosing a Nurse-Midwife: Your Guide to Safe, Sensitive Care During Pregnancy and the Birth of Your Child," by Catherine M. Poole, John Wiley & Sons, 1994. This book is a guide to choosing a birth plan and an introduction to the philosophy of midwifery.

• "Diary of a Midwife," by Juliana Van Olphen-Fehr, Bergin & Garvey, 1998. The author, a midwife, writes about her experience and how women can take control of the birth process.

• "The Thinking Woman´s Guide to a Better Birth," by Henci Goer, Perigee, 1999. This book tells women how to make informed medical decisions and avoid interventions.

This professional organization provides doula training, study materials and referrals. A doula is a trained labor companion who offers the mother support during delivery and after the baby is born.
