Washington-area builders were recognized for achievement at the 44th annual Finest for Family Living Awards ceremonies last month at the George Mason University Center for the Performing Arts.

A total of 115 awards were presented. The event, including a reception and dinner, was hosted by Chuck Conconi, Washingtonian editor at large, WUSA-TV society and arts correspondent and BBC special correspondent.

"We've seen a number of important projects major new communities, multifamily initiatives, infill and redevelopment come to life in the Washington area this year," said Charles Browning, chairman of the Finest for Family Living Awards. "It is by creating a sense of place that the residential housing market remains strong when other economic indicators start to decline. This year's winners share the distinction of setting the standards by which excellence is measured."

Award winners were selected for excellence in overall design, innovative use of space and comparative value within the market segment. Builders competed in 18 categories: single-family homes on small lots, single-family homes on large lots, attached housing (town houses and duplexes), condos/co-ops/conversions, customized single-family homes, one-of-a-kind single-family homes, site land planning, senior living environment, rental units, special achievements in affordable housing, residential remodeling, residential historic renovation, high-tech innovation, innovative design, special achievements in overall amenities, special achievements in existing resort community, best in show and lifetime achievement.

The top award in each category is the winner, followed in many cases by a second-place award of merit and, in some categories, honorable mention.

Judges for the competition are experts drawn from the national and local building industry, including architects, builders, advertising and marketing specialists and land planners.

The Finest for Family Living Awards are sponsored by James Hardie Siding Products, New Homes Guide and The Washington Times in cooperation with the building industry associations serving Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia.
