Seen and Heard last night at Cole Field House:
AN ORANGE PREVIEW? Last night's game may have been a preview of the Orange Bowl, as the ACC champion football Terrapins could face Big Ten title winner Illinois Jan. 2. Maryland has a tie-in with the game, and is most likely headed to Miami. Illinois will be an at-large selection since the Big Ten doesn't have the Rose Bowl connection this season.
SELF DENIED While the schedule was being drawn up in the offseason, Illinois coach Bill Self had requested this game be played tonight to give his team some rest after playing three games in three days before catching a redeye flight to Baltimore on Saturday night. That appeal was denied by the leagues due to television. Self and the Illini had lost a coin toss also that would have given them a home game this season in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Instead, they will play host to a game in the series next season.
RALPH IN THE HOUSE Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen cheered the Terps on from his courtside seat. The "Fridge" sat just feet away from Mike Tirico and former Terps great Len Elmore, who were broadcasting the game for ESPN, and came on the air for an interview early in the second half.
