Cadillac used the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance to introduce its new XLR. The concept car that evolved into this new roadster debuted in Detroit in 2000 as the Evoq, being the first model of the Art & Science styling theme that was brought to life under the guidance of chief designer Kip Wasenko.

No doubt, the new Cadillac will be compared with the Mercedes-Benz SL. The XLR also has the metal roof that folds away in the trunk in 29 seconds. Production of the XLR starts in January, but the first month's production will be used by GM fleet to prevent any unexpected problems when the car is sold to the public. According to GM's Bob Lutz, no XLR will leave the factory before its quality and trim are perfect.

Under the hood of the XLR we will see a modified version of the Northstar engine, teamed to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. Although Cadillac does not mention horsepower, expect it to be around 315 horsepower.

The XLR will be sharing its platform with the new Corvette C6 and will also be built in Bowling Green, Ky. Cadillac also released the first picture of the SRX crossover that started its life as the Vizon concept car in 2001 in Detroit.

The SRX is built on the same platform as the CTS and is the third model of the Art & Science styling generation. There will be a choice of a 4.6-liter Northstar V-8 or a 3.6-liter V-6. The SRX will be available with rear wheel drive or AWD.

Cadillac claims with the SRX the longest wheelbase in its class and consequently the most leg room for passengers occupying the second row of seats. The crossover can be equipped with a third row boosting the passenger capacity to seven.

The low center of gravity and Magnetic Ride Control (the system that adjusts the suspension 1,000 times per second) should provide a good ride and excellent handling.

The new luxury ute will be manufactured at GM's new Lansing Grand River facility in Michigan.
