Two Virginia men are being held in the Alexandria, Va. jail while one other escaped after a car chase that began in Northeast and ended in Old Town. At least one bullet struck a D.C squad car during the pursuit Friday night, police said.
Dale Johnson, 28, of Woodbridge, and Otis McClain, 28, from Alexandria, are being held in anticipation of charges from the District, said Amy Bertsch, a spokeswoman for the Alexandria police department.
"One of the two is believed to be the driver," Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Sgt. Joe Gentile said. The pursuit included a D.C. police helicopter.
Shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, D.C. police received a report of a man with a gun in the 1900 block of Gales Street NE. When officers arrived, three men jumped into a Lincoln Continental and sped off, Sgt. Gentile said.
The pursuit continued down Benning Road and south on Route 295, where one shot was fired into the windshield of the D.C. police car, he said.
"No injuries," he added.
About 9:25, Alexandria Police Chief Charles Samarra was driving on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway after having left police headquarters when he saw the chase on the inner loop, near Route 1, Miss Bertsch said. He informed headquarters, and Alexandria police assisted toward the end.
The three men attempted to flee several blocks from the Beltway, at South Alfred and Duke streets in Old Town, officials said. One escaped and was still on the loose last night. Police are unsure of his identity.
The three can be charged with assault on a police officer while armed, Sgt. Gentile said. Police are not certain who fired the shot or how many shots were fired, he said.
The two suspects are expected to appear Tuesday before a judge in Alexandria.
