Woodland Drive in Massachusetts Heights in Northwest Washington has a reputation for being one of Washington's priciest and most elegant streets.

The road winds between Embassy Row and Rock Creek Park and is dotted by gracious custom-designed homes in eclectic styles such as Tudor, contemporary and Colonial.

The stately Georgian residence at 2903 Woodland Drive almost floats above the street on a private hill with terraced lawns and gardens defined by a winding stone staircase and handsome gray stone retaining walls. Old-fashioned urns blend with outdoor lighting to create an elegant setting for the all-brick home, which was built in 1922. Now on the market for $1.695 million, this home features a light-filled interior that nicely blends state-of-the-art amenities with Old World charm.

A portico entrance opens onto the grand foyer, which has an attractive front-to-back view that even allows guests to glimpse the private patio through the rear French doors. Hardwood flooring throughout the home have been polished and refurbished to perfection, and the foyer includes an elegant chandelier, original crown and chair-rail moldings, and a staircase to the upper level along one wall.

To the right of the foyer is a grand living room, perfect for entertaining elegantly. Recessed lighting has been added to enhance the room, while a large wood-burning fireplace with a Colonial-style mantel and original crown moldings provide a historic ambience. A rear extension to the home, added in 1992, includes a media room off the living room with three Palladian-style French doors leading to the patio, recessed lighting, and columns on one side to define the space.

On the other side of the living room is a warm solarium with Italian tile flooring, recessed lighting and windows on three sides. One wall of the solarium is white-painted brick, which adds a cozy feeling, and the walls of windows frame treetop views of Rock Creek Park.

On the opposite side of the foyer is the formal dining room, a banquet-size room with wainscoting, crown moldings, and a built-in corner china cabinet with a glass front. Three large windows across the front of the dining room fill the space with light in the daytime.

Beyond the dining room is the kitchen, also extended in 1992 and recently renovated. Hardwood flooring blends with the custom-designed cabinets, which provide extensive well-organized storage. Recessed lighting overhead supplements the wall of four windows over the sink to ensure an always well-lit room. Granite counters provide preparation areas and an island for eating breakfast, and the state-of-the-art appliances include a gas cooktop with a downdraft, a double wall oven, a microwave, a side-by-side refrigerator and a dishwasher.

An arched entrance leads from the kitchen to the comfortable breakfast room, which includes a huge skylight overhead, a fireplace flanked by built-in bookcases, and a door to the garage. Nearby are a rear staircase to the second level and a powder room.

Between the kitchen and the media room is the rear extension of the front hallway. A set of French doors leads from this hall to the private patio of brick paving stones, lined on one side by tall trees. A staircase leads from the patio to the deck, a perfect place for entertaining under the stars or dining outdoors in pleasant weather. Summertime would be the perfect time to open this home to guests, with the French doors off the hall and three French doors off the media room all leading to the patio and then onto the upper level deck.

For more private sunbathing and enjoying the outdoors, the master suite on the second level has its own deck, with tree-top views of the park and the city. The master suite has lots of closet space including a walk-in closet, two double closets, linen closets and built-in bookshelves. The marble master bath has two back-to-back vanities divided by a tall mirror, a soaking tub, an oversized glass-enclosed shower, recessed lighting and his-and-hers water closets.

The second level includes two large linen closets in the hall and a connecting marble bath with an oversized walk-in marble shower between two secondary bedrooms. The second bedroom includes a private sitting room.

Hardwood stairs lead to the finished third level, where a full bath off the hall includes a combination tub and shower. At the center of this level is a deep dormer window with under-the-eaves storage on either side. The fourth bedroom includes a dormer window and two quarter-moon shaped windows that add charm. The fifth bedroom includes a closet and access to additional unfinished storage space.

The lower level has been completed with a full apartment for an au-pair or staff suite, including a full kitchen with a built-in desk which can also serve as a breakfast bar. A spacious living room space is adjacent to the bedroom, and the suite includes a full bath and a separate entrance. This level also has a laundry room with a tile floor and a huge storage room. Other amenities of this home include a security system, electric air conditioning, gas heat with radiators, and gas hot water.

Sophisticated buyers will be impressed with the level of care taken when renovating this home to meet today's standards, while maintaining the tone of 1920 sensibilities.
