When the owners of the house at 10894 Lake Windermere Drive in Great Falls found the land on which they wanted to build, they began working with two architects to create the contemporary-style home of their dreams.

Designing an open and dramatic home that would lend itself easily to their love of entertaining was one priority. Another was the need to orient the home toward the lovely views of Lake Windermere and its surrounding trees.

Now on the market for $1.095 million, this homes lies within a neighborhood of custom-designed homes, each having a unique character. The owners chose to place their retreat back from the road behind a circular driveway, with the majority of the windows facing the lake. Skylights punctuate the roof of the upper-level bedrooms and the two-story living room, and windows of all shapes and sizes have been placed across the back and sides of the home.

While the interior features an open floor plan so that guests can mingle easily in every room, the exterior has been designed for both entertaining and private moments.

A redwood deck winds sinuously around the back of the house, partially shaded by trees. Built-in benches allow for simple seating during large outdoor parties. A fenced private courtyard on the side of the house embraces the L-shaped, heated, Gunite swimming pool, which has both a pebbled stone deck and redwood decking around it. A glass door leads from the pool deck to a side corridor of the main level, which holds a large sauna, a shower and a powder room. A pocket door divides this part of the home from the rest, allowing for privacy while in the sauna.

The main entrance to the home has redwood decking outside that leads to the all-glass front entrance. The foyer includes a two-story ceiling, gray-toned ceramic tile flooring and built-in glass display cases, along with spectacular views of the all-glass back of the home and the lake beyond.

To the right of the foyer is the two-story living room, which has a soaring peaked ceiling with skylights, a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, pendant lighting, hardwood flooring and walls of glass with sliding doors to the deck. In one corner of the living room, a kidney-shaped space has been created for an indoor garden that thrives in the sunny space. Adjacent to the living room and defined by built-in open-glass shelving is the library, which has additional built-in bookshelves in the corner.

In front of the foyer is an oak semicircular staircase with cantilevered open steps that keep to the open theme of the home. The formal dining room includes more built-in glass shelves that allow for a separation between the rooms without needing a wall. The dining room includes a contemporary-style crystal chandelier, a sliding glass door to the deck, and a built-in sideboard and wet bar. The guest powder room nearby has a unique wide sink and a garden space in one corner.

Beyond the dining room and overlooking the swimming pool is the heart of this home, an open-plan kitchen with gray-toned wood cabinets, some with glass fronts, ceramic tile flooring, a center island with a Jenn-Air cooktop and built-in cutting boards and recessed lighting. Additional food preparation space is available along the counters and at the two-level breakfast bar, where guests can relax while the owners cook. The breakfast bar is part of the open breakfast room, which includes a built-in sideboard and sliding glass doors to the deck.

Beyond the breakfast area is the light-filled step-down family room that has three sets of sliding glass doors, two triple skylights, track and pendant lighting, an art display area, and a cozy fireplace surrounded by built-in carpeted seating. On winter nights, this spot is the warmest place to relax with a book or a friend, or to listen to music on the wired-in stereo system.

A circular staircase leads to an extraordinary master retreat on the second level, also accessible from the upper-level hall. The 65-foot master suite has skylights and includes the master bath, sitting area and bedroom. The bedroom area has a wall of windows and a private redwood deck, a fireplace with a special heating element to blow the warm air into the room, and built-in shelves that include a niche for a refrigerator and microwave oven. The sitting/exercise area includes a wall of built-in drawers and shelves.

The master bath features a six-person Jacuzzi in the center of the room that has been built into the home. Above the hot tub is a large skylight, and nearby are a double-sink, a toilet and bidet, and a two-person shower. An oversize walk-through closet with access to additional storage space is complemented by an additional closet.

The second bedroom upstairs includes a private full bath; the third bedroom includes a door to the hall bath. The fourth bedroom, currently in use as a sitting room, has a large window that overlooks the treetops and the lake.

The closets in the home have been outfitted with custom drawers and shelves, and a pull-down staircase from the hall leads to extra attic storage.

The owners came from Texas, where few homes include a basement, so this home has been built entirely above ground. Amenities of the home include three heat pumps, three phone lines, a security system, an upgraded electrical system and a digital water filter system. The pool has a new filter, pump and propane heater.

The unique styling of this home has suited the owners well for the past 17 years, through raising a family and entertaining many, many friends.
