In his Jan. 18 Commentary piece, “Demagoguing the tax cut,” Joseph Perkins states that Democrats control the Senate due to Sen. Jim Jeffords' defection from the party of President Bush. This is not entirely true.

Those of us in Georgia know that the Democrats are in control because of the untimely stroke and death of the great Georgia Republican Sen. Paul Coverdell. Georgia's Democratic governor, Roy E. Barnes, took that opportunity to appoint a Democrat, Sen. Zell Miller. Without the loss of Mr. Coverdell, the Senate would be in the control of the Republicans regardless of “Jumpin' Jim.”
