D.C. United will open its seventh Major League Soccer season March 23 on the road against the MLS runner-up Los Angeles Galaxy, according to the 2002 schedule released yesterday by the downsized 10-team league.

United's home opener will be against the Chicago Fire on March 30 at RFK Stadium.

In addition, United has scheduled two doubleheaders with the Washington Freedom of the Women's United Soccer Association.

The first will be May 18, with the Freedom's game against the Carolina Courage followed by United's match with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. The second doubleheader July 27 matches the Freedom against the San Diego Spirit, followed by United's game against the New England Revolution.

The bulk of United's 28-game regular season will be played on Saturdays.

United will play seven midweek games and a Sunday matinee at the MetroStars on Aug. 25. United's first home midweek match is June 19 against the Colorado Rapids.

United plays each team in the Eastern Conference four times and each in the Western Conference twice with the exception of the Kansas City Wizards, whom United plays twice at home and once on the road.

No national or local televised dates have been set.

United's nonleague season kicks off March 6 with a CONCACAF Champions Cup match against Guatemala's CSD Comunicaciones in Guatemala City. The return match will be March 13.
