Life without Chamique will extend to five games.
Washington Mystics star forward Chamique Holdsclaw underwent an MRI yesterday on her left ankle and will be out until the All-Star break. She will be re-evaluated before the July 15 All-Star Game at MCI Center.
Holdsclaw, who leads the WNBA in scoring (19.9) and rebounding (11.8), was placed on the injured reserve list Sunday and sat out of the Mystics' 56-55 win over the Charlotte Sting later that day. Holdsclaw was examined yesterday by the team doctor, who recommended she take another week off.
Holdsclaw, who is having an MVP-like season, sprained her ankle Friday in a 72-66 loss at the Portland Fire. Holdsclaw was fighting for a loose ball when her leg got pinned under Fire forward DeMya Walker with 7:19 left in the first half and the Mystics trailing 22-18. Replays showed Holdsclaw's ankle buckled and her left knee twisted awkwardly.
On Sunday, it was believed Holdsclaw would miss the three games mandatory for going on the injured list and return to the Mystics lineup for Monday's game at the Orlando Miracle. Holdsclaw's MRI revealed no additional damage other than the sprain, but she now will miss next Tuesday's home game against the Phoenix Mercury and next Saturday's home game against the New York Liberty.
This is the second time this season the Mystics (11-4) have been forced to play without Holdsclaw. In early June, Holdsclaw missed two games the Mystics split on a West Coast trip because of the death of her grandmother. Including Sunday's win, the Mystics are 2-1 this season without Holdsclaw in the lineup.
"She'll be back. She's going to heal just fine," rookie forward Stacey Dales-Schuman said. "To battle through games without her shows the maturity leadership and the leadership of this team."
