When Robert E. Simon began planning Reston in the 1960s, he envisioned a community where residents could walk everywhere to work, to play, to shop. While not all of Reston's neighborhoods have fulfilled this promise, the luxury town homes at Lakeport Way offer all these amenities, plus one that is even more important to many people: lakefront living.

Lakeport Way's homes present a serene facade of pale gray cedar siding punctuated with short driveways and attached garages, often with a round window or an arched window, a signature design feature of developer Warren Katz.

The backs of these homes are far more dramatic, with walls of windows, decks and balconies to maximize the lake views.

On Lake Thoreau, Reston's largest deep lake, the home at 1921 Lakeport Way presides over a wide and long view of the water that is completely visible when the foliage is gone from the trees that line the shore. A private waterside deck, pier and canoe will convey to the buyers of this home.

Now on the market for $514,900, this town home enjoys a prime location within a few minutes' walk of the Reston Association's Lake Thoreau swimming pool and whirlpool. Tennis courts are a few minutes farther, and the South Lakes Shopping Center is easily accessible via a path around the lake.

Not too far away are several more shopping centers, including Reston Town Center and Lake Anne Village, in the oldest section of Reston. Recreational amenities in Reston are abundant, including 16 swimming pools, tennis courts, walking and jogging trails, basketball courts, soccer fields, tot lots and playgrounds.

Reston Town Center offers ice skating in winter and outdoor concerts in summer, along with movie theaters, restaurants and shops. Outdoor tables and chairs placed among the trees and next to the fountain are a popular meeting place for locals of all ages.

The Lakeport Way town home offers amenities of its own in addition to its excellent location, including two decks (one by the lake) and a balcony. The main level of the home, reached by a wooden walkway adjacent to the two-car garage, features recently refinished hardwood flooring and recessed lighting. Just inside the front door is a foyer with a powder room and closet. To the left of the foyer is an eat-in kitchen with a pantry and a breakfast bar that opens onto the dining room. A pull-down screen can close off this opening into the kitchen, if desired. Upgraded appliances include a trash compactor, a built-in microwave, a Jenn-Air dishwasher, a Jenn-Air cooktop and oven, and a large G.E. refrigerator.

Adjacent to the kitchen is the dining room, which has one wall of mirrors and a niche with plumbing for a wet bar, if desired. A few steps down lead into the living room, which has a wood-burning fireplace with two sides of glass, flanked by a glass door to the wide balcony and a huge picture window on the other side. The wood balcony has plenty of room for a gas grill, a dining table and chairs, and more chairs for relaxing.

The upper level features a large landing with a niche for a small desk or a dresser or bookshelf, a signature element of a Warren Katz home, which allows for each homeowner to express individuality when using this flexible space. A large closet on one side of this niche holds a full-size stacked washer and dryer.

The master suite, at the rear of the house for maximum water views, has a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake. A large walk-in closet is supplemented with a second closet, and the owners enjoy a sumptuous bath with dove-gray ceramic tile flooring, a dove-gray whirlpool tub, and a double-sink vanity with a matching ceramic tile counter. A second door in the bathroom leads to a separate shower and commode.

Two additional bedrooms on this level share a hall bath. One bedroom, now furnished as an office, has an angled wall and a corner window. The other bedroom, as large as the master bedroom, has a half-moon-shaped window covering one wall, a ceiling fan, and a huge sitting area with more windows and a niche for a dresser.

The above-ground lower level has been completely finished with a two-level recreation room. The front section, measuring 12-by-14 feet, has a full bath to one side and multiple storage areas nearby. A few steps down lead into a second recreation room with a wood-burning fireplace and a glass door to the back yard. Adjacent to this recreation room is a bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows looking on the lake.

The back yard features a deck close to the house, shaded by the balcony above, and there is a series of flagstone steps leading to the lakeside deck and pier. Tall trees line this part of the lake, forming a natural shade in summer for the deck but allowing for water views from the windows all year. When the foliage is off the trees, the water becomes even more visible from the house.

With the amenities of Lake Thoreau and Reston at this home's doorstep, residents will be tempted to spend all their time outdoors, but this home's naturally beautiful views and cozy rooms will create a lovely haven when the weather changes again and sitting by the fire becomes more appealing.
