The Rover gives his quote of the year award to Sergio Garcia, who shot a 68 yesterday. When Fox Sports reporter Lisa Dergan, a k a Miss July 1998, approached Garcia for a post-round interview, the following exchange took place:

Dergan: "Hi, Sergio. Got a minute?"

Garcia: "How about a couple of hours?"

Dergan responded by bestowing a kiss upon the grinning Spaniard.

How can you not root for golf's charismatic young rogue?

• The Open isn't the only thing that landed in Farmingdale this week. The body of crime boss John Gotti arrived late Wednesday night at Republic Airport, where a slew of portly men in black shirts driving Lincoln Continentals were on hand to take possession.

• The Rover continues to marvel at the USGA's incompetence. His trip on the media shuttle from the Islandia Marriott to the course (20 miles away) took nearly 90 minutes. Why? Because the USGA hired a shuttle driver who was "not really sure how to get to Bethpage." That's classic.

• Three-time Open champion Hale Irwin shot an 82 yesterday to clip the Rover by one stroke. But let's see Irwin shoot an 82 after sleeping in his car. That's at least two strokes, don't you think? So the Rover is adding Irwin to his list of Senior Tour victims this season. Palmer at the Masters. Irwin at the Open. He wants Player at the British and Jack at the PGA.
