Location: Clara Barton National Historic Site, 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo.

Directions: Take the Beltway to Exit 40 (Clara Barton Parkway). Follow signs to Glen Echo Park.

Hours: Open seven days a week, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission is by guided tour only. Tours are given on the hour.

• The house's narrow stairways may be difficult for some visitors to walk up and down and impossible for children in strollers.

• Upcoming special events: On June 23 at 1 p.m., actress Mary Ann Jung will portray Clara Barton.

• Nearby, Glen Echo Park (with its carousel, puppet theater and live Adventure Theatre) and Discovery Creek Children's Museum and artisans' workshops could round out a trip.
