Seen and heard last night at Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, N.C.:
ROHLOFF DEMOTED Todd Rohloff, called up from the Portland (Maine) Pirates on Jan.14, has been re-assigned to the American Hockey League team for conditioning. Rohloff had been a healthy scratch for seven straight games and agreed to the move.
Rohloff came up a week after defenseman J.F. Fortin, but Fortin, also a rookie, has been a standout since he first played. Rohloff has struggled a little more. His benching allowed the Caps to work Sylvain Cote back into the lineup, giving the team badly needed experience.
GREAT MATCHUP Two guaranteed future Hall of Famers, Washington's Adam Oates and Carolina's Ron Francis, were in action against each other. Although both are 39, Francis has played 364 more NHL games than Oates because Oates went to college before turning pro.
The two centers are considered among the true class acts at their position. Francis scores more goals on average than Oates, Oates records more assists on average than Francis and more points per game. Both lead their teams in scoring this season.
