GLEN ECHO, Md. (AP) Rep. Constance A. Morella, Maryland Republican, has kicked off her campaign for a ninth term as representative of her state's 8th District. Although Mrs. Morella isn't sure who her Democratic challenger will be, she says she's prepared for a tough campaign.
The Republican incumbent officially began her re-election bid at an outdoor rally in Glen Echo Park yesterday afternoon. She will be campaigning in a newly drawn district that includes much of southeastern Montgomery County and portions of Prince George's County.
The new district boundaries do not include rural up-county precincts where Mrs. Morella has enjoyed strong support in the past.
Democrats have targeted Mrs. Morella's seat in their efforts to regain control of the House of Representatives.
The current field of challengers seeking the Democratic nomination include lawyer Ira Shapiro, Del. Mark Shriver, Sen. Christopher Van Hollen and community activist Deborah Vollmer.
