QUANTICO, Va. (AP) An unidentified man was shot yesterday afternoon while fleeing from Marine Corps security personnel after apparently trying to enter the Marine base at Quantico illegally.
Maj. Tim Keefe, spokesman for Marine Corps Base Quantico, said the incident began about 5 p.m., when a guard at the security checkpoint at the base entrance saw a weapon inside a black Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck entering the base.
"Evidently, this individual tried to flee the checkpoint and was pursued by military police on the western portion of the base," Maj. Keefe said.
At some point, the driver left the vehicle and ran, Maj. Keefe said. It was during the ensuing foot chase that the intruder "sustained a gunshot wound to the arm," Maj. Keefe said.
Maj. Keefe said he was unable to confirm whether the wound was caused by Marines. He also said information about the wounded man's identity and the type of weapon involved was not available.
The man was apprehended and taken to Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge, Va., for treatment, Maj. Keefe said. No information on his condition was available, Maj. Keefe said.
