COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) A University of Maryland student was fatally stabbed early yesterday in a fight near the university's College Park campus, police said.
Authorities received a report of an assault about 1:30 a.m. When police responded, the 20-year-old victim was found on the ground. He died at a local hospital several hours later, police said.
Police identified the victim as Brandon Malstrom of Phoenix, Md. WNUV-TV reported that he was a graduate of Dulaney High School in Timonium.
The scuffle broke out several blocks from campus, where a party had been going on in the 7300 block of Dickinson Avenue, said Cpl. Tammy Sparkman, a Prince George's County Police spokeswoman. "We do believe at that particular address there was some type of party going on there, and Mr. Malstrom was involved in a struggle, a fight, with some suspects, but we don't know how many," she said.
More than a half-dozen university and Prince George's County police cruisers blocked traffic while officers questioned witnesses and detained one man for questioning, the Diamondback, the campus newspaper, reported on its Web site.
"We are questioning several individuals just to determine what happened, but we have not arrested anyone," Cpl. Sparkman said.
George Cathcart, a university spokesman, declined to comment last night, saying a Prince George's police investigation was ongoing.
The university's football team had just won a homecoming game.
against 14th-ranked North Carolina State on Saturday.
The campus has been marred by a series of high-profile riots after football and basketball games.
