Forget model railroading. Real trains await, and all of them are less than three hours from downtown Washington. Here's a guide.

Walkersville Southern Railroad: 34 West Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville. Fall Foliage trains 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in October. $7 adults, $3.50 children 3-12. Haunted Rail/Trail excursions combine train ride with outings along spooky trails. Trains depart every 20 minutes from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 25 and 26. $8 per person; paying adult must accompany children under 18. Santa trains begin Dec. 7. See www.wsrr.org or call 877/363-WSRR.

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad:
13 Canal St., Cumberland. A 32-mile round trip to Frostburg. Diesel trips Monday through Wednesday, steam trips Thursday through Sunday through Oct. 27; steam trips Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 13. $19-$35 adults, $10-$20 children. Senior and group rates. Train robbery excursion 11:30 a.m. this Saturday. Special trains include Mystery Trains, Pumpkin Express, Santa Express. See www.wmsr.com or call 800/TRAIN-50.

B&O; Railroad:
Once-a-year, daylong Fall Foliage round trip to Frederick. Double-deck MARC commuter train departs at 8 a.m. Oct. 19 from Dorsey station (Exit 7 off Md. Route 100 between U.S. 1 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway) and travels the Metropolitan Branch, Washington Branch and Old Main lines. $50 adults, $35 children 12 and under. Strasburg Railroad: Route 741, 301 Gap Road, Strasburg. Regular trains daily through Oct. 27. Halloween trains 7 and 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday in October. Cost is $9 to $13 for adults, $4.50-$9.50 for children ages 3 to 11, free to $4 for children under 3. Pre-purchase tickets online. West Virginia
Potomac Eagle: Wappocomo Station, Route 28 North, Romney. 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, Sunday; 2 p.m. Monday, Friday through Oct. 26.
