Sarah Beardsley said accounting scandals weren't the reason she left WorldCom Inc., the international telecommunications corporation.
She found a better career opportunity with Savvis Communications Inc.
"I had a great 16-year career with WorldCom, and it's a great company, but I had a greater chance to help a telecommunications company grow by signing on with Savvis," said Ms. Beardsley, 39.
The new vice president of enterprise sales at Savvis, the network service provider with headquarters in Herndon, said she will focus on increasing sales for the company's virtual private networks.
The Internet protocol network service connects Fortune 500 companies to financial applications and data worldwide.
"I'll be working to expand this very differentiated product among higher-end customers and integrate our network systems in the financial services industry," which includes legal, media, retail, professional services, health care and manufacturing companies, Ms. Beardsley said.
She is a former senior vice president of WorldCom's service-provider division, handling up to $6 billion in revenues. It was in this role that she became familiar with Savvis, one of her customers at WorldCom, and a varied set of telecommunications and Internet service clients.
"My past contacts and background with many of Savvis' clients makes my job easier in the sense of working and modifying the customers' network to their needs," she said.
Jack Finlayson, president and chief operating officer of Savvis, said he was confident he had hired the right person for the job.
"Sarah's work with WorldCom was very professional, and I knew that she was a person of high integrity and that in no way was she involved with the whole fiasco going on with that company," Mr. Finlayson said. "She really brings the customer background and relationships to land us Fortune 500 companies like Reuters."
Ms. Beardsley said the biggest challenge of her job change has been understanding the workings of the company's network services.
"I've never worked within this segment of the telecommunications industry before, and the tech team has been very supportive in helping me understand how our network carriers work," she said. "It's important when I'm trying to convince various companies on how our service is going to enhance their day-to-day operations."
Ms. Beardsley will reside in Chicago with her 14-year-old son while working out of the company's main and satellite offices.
