HARARE, Zimbabwe, Feb. 1 (UPI) — At least 34 people were killed and dozens injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train in western Zimbabwe, reports said Saturday.

Officials said they feared the death toll would rise as emergency crews sorted through the wreckage.

State radio said the trains collided near the town of Dete on a railway line linking the southern city of Bulawayo to the western resort of Victoria Falls. Injured passengers were being ferried to a hospital at the nearby Hwange coal mine.

Transport Minister Witness Mangwende was heading to the accident site to lead an investigation into the cause of the accident.
