ST. GEORGE, Utah (AP) — Hot temperatures rivaled some of the concoctions that were bubbling away at the Utah State Chili Cook-off.

A high of 110 degrees Saturday didn’t scare off chili cooks and judges from Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Nevada and California, who gathered to discover who put together the best combination of meat, beans, peppers and herbs.

Sylvia Steinberg, a judge in Saturday’s event, toted around a spray bottle filled with water. Others also found ways of keeping cool. Chili cook Dave Thomas of Oxnard, Calif., used a squirt gun to pick fights with people.
