Architect Greg Lugmeyer designed and built a stone-and-cedar contemporary home in Great Falls 15 years ago, a modern version of a castle in the woods.

The secluded 5-acre site surrounds this home with woods and landscaped gardens for nature views from every window. When viewing the home, it’s clear that the architect succeeded in his two objectives: to blend the residence into the woods as much as possible and to fill the home with sunlight.

Now on the market for $1,395,000, the home at 10722 Fawn Drive includes decks and balconies on multiple levels and has been sited so that sunlight travels through the home from east to west. Morning light bathes the master suite and the kitchen and breakfast area. At day’s end, sunset gently washes the walls of the dining room.

The exterior of the home features landscaped grounds with shrubs and ground covers accenting the decks and flagstone patios, with surrounding grounds including stacked stone walls, hemlocks, dogwood trees, Japanese and red maples and boxwoods.

A breezeway links the house with the large two-car garage, which could be expanded to a three-car garage with the addition of an extra door. The breezeway also can be used for walking from the house to the rear gardens. The rear flagstone patio includes a fishpond.

The unique floor plan, set on four levels, surrounds a central atrium that allows light to filter to each floor. While access to the house flows from decks and patios into many rooms, the main entrance is through a covered entryway.

Double wood doors are protected from the elements by a stone overhang, which also provides a dramatic portico for guests.

Inside the wood doors, the main foyer features marble flooring and a handsome louvered wood door leading to the guest closet. A dramatic cut-glass window offers a focal point for both the foyer and the first staircase landing.

The first level of the home includes a family room with a bluestone floor-to-ceiling fireplace with a raised hearth, and glass doors leading to a large party deck. The deck includes steps to the rear garden and the flagstone patio, while the family room’s windows frame views of the gardens and woods.

The adjacent solarium includes a bluestone wall, a marble floor, three skylights set into the sloped ceiling, three walls of windows surrounded by wood trim, and glass doors leading to the party deck.

A few steps up from the landing near the grand central staircase and the family room are a full bath and a bedroom with two closets. The breezeway from the garage provides another entrance to this level.

The main living level, the second level of the home, features a grand living room with glass doors to decks on either end of the room, a wall of Palladian windows with wood trim, and a bluestone floor-to-ceiling fireplace. Nearby, the dining room includes a glass door to one of the decks, along with multiple wood-trimmed windows. Both of these rooms have white oak parquet flooring.

The kitchen, placed a few steps down on this level, features an adjacent breakfast area with multiple floor-to-ceiling wood-trimmed windows curving along one wall, with a glass door to a separate balcony perfect for breakfast outdoors. The kitchen includes custom cherry cabinets, green slate counters and a matching green slate floor. Appliances include a Sub-Zero refrigerator and three Jenn-Air ranges.

A hallway over the breezeway connects this level to the au pair suite, along with a half bath, which has a granite counter and brass hardware. The suite includes a living room with a wall of windows; a bedroom; and a full bath. The au pair bedroom also could function as a large pantry or storage room, if desired.

Adjacent to the au pair suite are a wine cellar with space for 850 bottles, a laundry room with Italian tile flooring and a cedar closet for seasonal storage.

The third level features a master-bedroom suite with the atrium at its center. On one end of the bedroom is a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, with an adjacent glass door to a private balcony. An enormous walk-in closet next to the bedroom includes built-in shelving.

The master bath features a whirlpool tub surrounded by marble and a wall of windows, a double-sink vanity, heat lamps, a skylight and an oversized tile shower.

Adjacent to the master bedroom is the upstairs library or sitting room, which has a vaulted ceiling and a skylight. This level includes two more bedrooms and a second full bath.

The unfinished lower level has a wood stove, high ceilings and walk-up stairs to the rear gardens. Plenty of space is available on this level for storage, a workroom or a hobby room.

The contemporary style of this home allows for flexible use of rooms on all four levels. For example, the private au pair suite could be adjusted to become two bedrooms, additional family room space and storage space, or a playroom or a home office.

Attention to detail in the home includes recessed lighting and ceiling fans in many rooms, skylights with built-in reflective shades, brass doorknobs, and two central locations for stereo equipment.

Two wells serve the home, one for inside water and one for the gardens. Three-zone heating provides comfort in all areas of the home, and sound-proofed French doors keep the kitchen noises silent to the rest of the rooms.

Privacy and greenery go hand in hand in Great Falls, as this contemporary home illustrates beautifully.
