Extended excursions put some cyclists right into “the zone.” Two major long-range tours take place next week:

• Bike Virginia: Billed as one of the top 10 tours in the United States and the premier cycling event in Virginia, this five-day trip takes 1,800 riders through 250 to 350 miles of beautiful Virginia and West Virginia scenery. June 20-25. Riders can pick and choose mileage and speed. Visit www.bikevirginia.com or call 757/229-0507.

• Tour de Friends: Thousands of riders will pedal 330 miles from Raleigh, N.C., to Washington to raise funds for AIDS research. June 19-22. For more information, or to volunteer, visit www.tourdefriends.com or call 202/742-RIDE.
