Catholic University, the 2001 NCAA Division III national champion, received a bye in the first-round of this year's NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament last night when bids were handed out.
The ninth-ranked Cardinals (24-4), despite an upset loss to Mary Washington College 70-68 in the championship game of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament Saturday, earned one of seven at-large bids in Division III. Catholic will play host to the winner of Thursday's game between Elizabethtown (Pa.) and Montclair (N.J.) State on Saturday night. Game time has yet to be determined.
The Cardinals will be making their sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament and are the only team in the country to advance to the last five Sweet 16s. They are 50-7 (.877) over the past two years.
